1. Express yourself in positive language. Say what is, not what is not.
2. Use transitions between paragraphs.
Transitions tie one paragraph to the next. . transition can be a word, like later, furthermore, additionally, or moreover; a phrase like After this incident...; or an entire sentence. .f you are writing about Topic A and now want to discuss Topic B, you can begin the new paragraph with a transition such as "Like (or unlike) Topic A, Topic B..."
3. Vary your sentence structure.
It's boring to see subject, verb, object all the time. Mix simple, complex, and compound sentences.
4. Understand the words you write.
You write to communicate, not to impress the admissions staff with your vocabulary.When you choose a word that means something other than what you intend, you neither communicate nor impress. You do convey the wrong message or convince the admissions committee that you are inarticulate.
5. Look up synonyms in a thesaurus when you use the same word repeatedly.
After the DELETE key, the thesaurus is your best friend. As long as you follow Tip 4, using one will make your writing more interesting.
6. Be succinct.
Compare: .uring my sophomore and junior years, there was significant development of my maturity and markedly improved self-discipline towards school work. .uring my sophomore and junior years, I matured and my self-discipline improved tremendously. The first example takes many more words to give the same information. The admissions people are swamped; they do not want to spend more time than necessary reading your essay. Say what you have to say in as few words as possible. Tips 7, 8, and 9 will help you to implement this suggestion.
7. Make every word count.
Do not repeat yourself. Each sentence and every word should state something new.
8. Avoid qualifiers such as rather, quite, somewhat, probably, possibly, etc.
.ou might improve your writing somewhat if you sometimes try to follow this suggestion. The example contains nonsense. Deleting unnecessary qualifiers will strengthen your writing 1000%. Equivocating reveals a lack of confidence. If you do not believe what you write, why should the admissions officer?
9. Use the active voice.
Compare: .he application was sent by the student.
Passive voice .he student sent the application.
Active voice They both communicate the same information. The active voice, however, is more concise; it specifies who is performing the action and what is the object. The passive voice is wordier and frequently less clear.
10. Read and reread 'Elements of Style' by William Strunk, Jr. and E.B. White. Containing basic rules of grammar, punctuation, composition, and style, this indispensable classic is available in paperback and is only eighty-five pages long.

新托福獨(dú)立寫(xiě)作一共有3個(gè)評(píng)分標(biāo)準(zhǔn):如何展開(kāi)論點(diǎn),如何組織結(jié)構(gòu)以及如何運(yùn)用語(yǔ)言表達(dá)觀點(diǎn)。語(yǔ)言的表達(dá)是項(xiàng)相對(duì)較耗時(shí)的任務(wù),不是一朝一夕即可掌握的,因此急需考生的長(zhǎng)期醞釀;而如何展開(kāi)論點(diǎn),相對(duì)應(yīng)其實(shí)與如何運(yùn)用語(yǔ)言是相輔相成的,同樣是需要時(shí)間。中國(guó)考生寫(xiě)作分?jǐn)?shù)不高并不是因?yàn)椴恢勒f(shuō)什么理由,而是不知道如何用英語(yǔ)恰當(dāng)?shù)谋磉_(dá)自己的中文思路。因此這3個(gè)評(píng)分標(biāo)準(zhǔn)中最有技巧最易提升的便是第二個(gè):如何組織結(jié)構(gòu)。
因此,有了以上的大致信息后,考生就應(yīng)該多思考如何能在30分鐘內(nèi)締造出完美的文章結(jié)構(gòu),來(lái)獲得考官的青睞?一篇好的結(jié)構(gòu)不僅包括必備的連接詞和過(guò)渡句,自然也離不開(kāi)永恒的內(nèi)在統(tǒng)一。
第一,連接詞過(guò)渡句
任何形式的英語(yǔ)文章中都應(yīng)該具備一定量的連接詞(路標(biāo)詞),因?yàn)樗鼈兪怯兄谧x者順利閱讀的“導(dǎo)航坐標(biāo)”;大多數(shù)考生在備考時(shí)也的確會(huì)準(zhǔn)備一系列此類連接詞,用于文章每個(gè)段落的段首;包括有表示“第一,第二,第三”等的連接詞。但是單純有段首連接詞還不足以支撐全文的結(jié)構(gòu),因此考生應(yīng)該同時(shí)準(zhǔn)備段中連接詞,包括“比如說(shuō),因?yàn)椋牵鄬?duì)比而言”等,粗略估計(jì),全文完成下來(lái)可以達(dá)到15個(gè)以上的路標(biāo)詞,不僅承接了全文,結(jié)構(gòu)清晰明了,而且也為時(shí)間緊張下的寫(xiě)作減輕了不少字?jǐn)?shù)壓力。以下為常用連接詞:

當(dāng)然,僅僅依靠連接詞是不足以表明全文的連貫性的,適當(dāng)?shù)奶砑舆^(guò)渡句也是很好的承接手段,如Official Guide To The New TOEFL P263中有一篇關(guān)于DISHONESTY KILLS RELIABILITY 的5分范文中就有出現(xiàn)多處明顯的段落過(guò)渡句,如第三段首“After stating that everyone’s opinion can be different about this, for me honesty, in other words, always telling…”用來(lái)承接上下兩段,以引出自己的觀點(diǎn)看法;第五段首“Although I would like to see altruistic, understanding, thoughtful and loyal behavior from people, an instance of the opposite…”等都明顯具備良好的過(guò)渡功能,讓全文更加流暢舒服,朗朗上口。
第二,內(nèi)在論證統(tǒng)一
Official Guide To The New TOEFL這一官方指南中也明確在寫(xiě)作部分提到“但要知道,僅僅使用第一,第二這樣的連接詞并不能保證作文結(jié)構(gòu)的嚴(yán)謹(jǐn),還要注意讓所有的觀點(diǎn)與文章的主題相關(guān),緊扣中心思想。換句話說(shuō),作文要有統(tǒng)一性,評(píng)分原則中提到的統(tǒng)一性,漸進(jìn)性和連貫性這些都是評(píng)估作文結(jié)構(gòu)是否嚴(yán)謹(jǐn),讀者能否比較容易地跟上作者思路的標(biāo)準(zhǔn)?!蓖ㄟ^(guò)上段敘述,我們不難發(fā)現(xiàn)作文論證統(tǒng)一性的重要性。
