fear用法歸納
用作動詞,注意以下用法:
(1) 表示“恐懼”“害怕”,其后接動詞時,可用不定式或動名詞(注:用不定式比用動名詞常見)。
如:He feared to speak in public.
他害怕在公共場合講話。
He fears to tell [telling] her what happened.
他怕告訴她所發(fā)生的事。
(2) 表示“恐怕”“擔(dān)心”,其后通常接 that 從句。
如:I fear that he will refuse us. 我擔(dān)心他會拒絕我們。
在答語中 that 從句可用 so, not 代之。
如:A:Will he come?
他會來嗎?
B:I fear so. /I fear not.
我想會來吧/我想不會來吧。
【注】后接否定的賓語從句時,通常不轉(zhuǎn)移到主句。
如:I fear it won’t do much good.
我擔(dān)心這不會有多大好處。
(3) 通常不接不定式的復(fù)合結(jié)構(gòu)。
如:
我擔(dān)心他會失敗。
誤:I fear him to fail.
正:I fear that he will fail.
(4) 比較 fear sb 與 fear for sb:前者意為害怕某人,后者意為為某人擔(dān)心。
如:
He fears his wife.
他怕他老婆。
He fears for his wife.
他為他老婆擔(dān)心。
2用作名詞,比較 for fear of 與 in fear of:前者意為“由于怕……”“以防……”,后者意為“害怕”“擔(dān)心”。
如:
Shut the window for fear of catching a cold.
關(guān)閉窗戶以免感冒。
We’re in fear of more snow.
我們擔(dān)心會再下雪。
The thief passed the day in fear of discovery.

二、詞義辨析:哪些詞還表示“害怕”呢?
alarm, fear, fright, horror, panic, terror, dread
這些名詞均含“恐懼、懼怕、驚恐”之意。
alarm強調(diào)突然意識到有危險而產(chǎn)生的恐懼心理。
fear普通用詞,側(cè)重指面臨危險或災(zāi)禍時內(nèi)心所引起的恐懼心情。
fright通常指一陣突然的、令人震驚的短暫恐懼,有時含夸張意味。
horror側(cè)重指因看到令人討厭或危險的東西或情景而引起的厭惡情緒、極度恐懼心情或戰(zhàn)栗的動作。
panic常指因突如其來的外界威脅使人群出現(xiàn)驚慌、恐懼或混亂。
terror指極大的恐懼和驚駭,語氣最強。
dread可與fear換用,著重害怕的心理,但dread常指膽怯和喪失勇氣。

第一個Alarm
alarm這個單詞在表示警報的時候一般是單數(shù),可數(shù)名詞,如經(jīng)濟學(xué)人...they promptly sounded an alarm.
但是在表示恐慌的時候是不可數(shù)名詞,如科林斯詞典例句:
The doctor said there was no cause for alarm.
醫(yī)生說不必驚慌。

第二個Scare

fear可以作動詞,如many people fear change許多人懼怕改變。
Fear可數(shù)名詞和不可數(shù)名詞都有見過,如:
I was sitting on the floor shivering with fear.

注意on fears over是固定表達,表示因為/由于擔(dān)心……
常見的表達還有for fear of/that,如:
She was afraid to say anything to them for fear of hurting their feelings.

還有固定用法,如:
At some time or other Eve had obviously put the fear of God into her.

Terrorise是動詞,如經(jīng)濟學(xué)人這句:
The new virus is a close relative of sars (severe acute respiratory syndrome), which emerged in China in 2002 and terrorised the world for over half a year before burning out.
這種新型病毒和非典(嚴重急性呼吸系統(tǒng)綜合征)病毒是近親。2002年中國爆發(fā)了非典疫情,造成世界范圍半年多時間的恐慌,然后才逐漸消失。

as much as表示程度的6種用法
1. 譯為“盡量”“盡最大努力(可能)”,主要用于as…as possible [one can]。如:
You ought to rest as much as possible. 你應(yīng)當(dāng)盡量多休息。
I have helped you as much as I can. Now it is up to you. 我已盡我所能地幫助你了?,F(xiàn)在該看你自己了。
I won't have a pudding it was as much as I could do to finish the very large first course. 我不要布丁了——我能把第一道大菜吃完就已經(jīng)很不容易了。
2. 譯為“像……一樣(的程度)”。如:
He doesn't think of you as much as he ought to. 他沒有像本應(yīng)該的那樣對你好。
We're in the dark just as much as you are. 我們跟你們一樣被蒙在鼓里。
I don't pretend to know as much as he does about it. 我不敢說我對此事的了解有他那樣多。

3. 譯為“與……一樣多”。如:

4. 譯為“好像”“幾乎”“并不多”“等于”。如:
That is as much as saying I am a liar. 那無異于說我撒謊。
He as much as admitted that it was his fault. 他幾乎承認說是他的錯。
You said “all right”, which was as much as to say that you were satisfied. 你當(dāng)是說“行”,這就等于說你認為滿意。
注:as much as to say [saying] 可視為習(xí)語,意為“等于說”。
5. 譯為“既……又”“不僅……而且”。如:
It is as much our responsibility as yours. 這既是你們的責(zé)任,也是我們的責(zé)任。
It is as much your responsibility as mine. 這件事你和我一樣都有責(zé)任。
He retorted that it was my fault as much as his. 他反駁說那不僅是他的錯,而且也是我的錯?;颍核瘩g說我的錯誤并不比他的錯誤小。

6. 有時有較靈活的譯法:
His latest play is not so much a farce as a burlesque tragedy. 他最近的一個劇本與其說是一個滑稽劇,不如說是一個滑稽的悲劇。
